The history of cannabis dates back to ancient times yet has suffered the setback of legal restriction and public prejudice. Fortunately, we have entered a new era of exploration and acceptance. In 1973, Oregon became the first state to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana. In 2014, the state legalized adult use and possession of marijuana or cannabis.
Medical & Recreational Cannabis
The dried flowering leaves, buds, seeds and stems of the cannabis plant are used both in medicine and for recreational effects. It is typically smoked, vaped, taken as a sublingual or swallowed and can also be directly applied to the skin. The plant is classified in numerous ways, including by strain, cannabinoid content, consumption method and terpene content.
When referring to different strains of cannabis, most people identify between sativa, indica and hybrids. This isn’t entirely accurate. These terms are more closely related to how the plant looks, whether tall with thin leaves or short with wide leaves. More important is the chemical makeup.
Cannabis contains more than 60 different types of chemical compounds or cannabinoids, with THC and CBD being the most well known. However, there are many, less abundant compounds that seem to contribute to the overall effects of various strains. A theory has evolved that cannabis compounds support each other to create distinctive effects and benefits. This is called the entourage effect.
